Our Story

On December 3, 2012, the world lost a bright light.  Madeline Claire Haynes, a Hutto HS student and athlete, took her life.  The shock was devastating to so many around her.  She gave no signs, no indications, no clues that she was capable of such an act.  Cruel texts from a stranger and a manipulative relationship in which she was involved created the circumstances that let her to despair.  A despair she had never before shown. We do suspect multiple concussions may have played a role as well.

Madeline truly had a zest for life.  She was funny, feisty, caring and a true friend.  Because she was the last person anyone thought capable of such an act, it demonstrated the fact that no one really knows what is going on in a person’s mind or life.  Kindness is paramount  We felt that a message of “Be Honest. Be Kind. Speak Up.” would be instrumental in helping teens navigate adolescence more successfully.  Out of tragedy, The Sandbox at Madeline’s Place was born so this message could be spread.

To provide a recreational center that caters to the educational, physical, and emotional needs of the teenagers in Hutto, TX, and surrounding communities.

“Madeline’s strongest points were that she was a wildly loyal friend, the full-body-hug-with-arms-and-legs-friend, and she had quite a mischievous sense of fun.  Those are two parts of her that we want to keep going.”
